Most people who fall in love with a Tahitian pearl can't quite explain why. It's something about the depth of it the way the light seems to come from somewhere inside. They hold it, and the weight feels right. That feeling is not an accident.

Why Tahitian Pearls Are Rare And How We Choose Each One

,How a pearl is born

Pearls are among the only gems created by a living organism. When an irritant enters an oyster, the animal coats it in layers of nacre over months and years — slowly, without interruption. Only a small fraction of oysters produce pearls at all. Of those, fewer still meet the standards of fine jewellery. Fewer still achieve the combination of colour, lustre, shape, and size that defines a true Tahitian pearl.

Their rarity isn't just about origin. It's also about the near-impossible convergence of qualities that makes each one worth keeping.

How we select at Jaune Pearls

Every pearl is evaluated against seven recognised grading factors. It's never one quality alone, it's always the balance of all seven.

Lustre is the most important for us. A fine pearl reflects light with such sharpness it appears to glow from within. Surface quality matters too natural pearls are rarely flawless, but the fewer the imperfections, the more valuable the pearl. Nacre quality determines longevity; thick, well-layered nacre gives a pearl its depth and durability over time.

Shape, colour, and size each add to the picture. Tahitian pearls range from soft silver and charcoal to deep peacock green and aubergine colours found nowhere else. Round pearls are the rarest, but a well-proportioned baroque can be just as compelling. And size only becomes truly valuable when the other factors are also strong.

Finally, matching for strands and pairs, achieving consistency across colour, lustre, and shape can take years. A perfectly matched strand is rarer than any single pearl within it.
